Google Digital Car Key

Digital Car Key lets Android users lock, unlock, and start their car with their phone, right from Google Wallet. Drivers loved the idea but setup felt technical and sharing a key felt risky. I designed a clear, secure experience: guided pairing, hands-free access, and simple key sharing with family and friends.

Situation

Physical keys are easy to lose and hard to share. Early Digital Car Key users struggled with pairing, weren’t sure when NFC or Ultra-Wideband would work, and didn’t trust giving a key to someone else.

Task

Make the phone feel as dependable as a physical key, with setup in minutes, access that just works, and sharing that keeps owners in control.

Action

Designed a step-by-step pairing flow in Google Wallet, hands-free and tap-to-unlock states, remote key sharing with permissions, and recovery options for lost or dead phones.

Result

A trusted key experience that boosts setup completion, increases key sharing between households, and gives drivers confidence to leave the physical key at home.

Understanding the Daily Drive

We rode along with drivers and interviewed families who share cars. Their biggest worries were getting locked out, a dead battery, and losing control once a key was shared. Speed mattered, but trust mattered more.

Setup in a Few Taps

Pairing starts from the car maker’s app or Google Wallet and walks drivers through each step with clear visuals of where to hold the phone. Progress states and plain-language errors replaced technical jargon, so drivers always know what’s happening.

Access That Just Works

On supported cars, Ultra-Wideband unlocks the doors as you approach, without taking the phone out. On others, a simple tap on the door handle does the job. Keys keep working even when the phone’s battery runs low, so drivers are never stranded.

Start your car from your smart watch.
Open your trunk with your phone or watch.
Automatically lock and unlock your doors.

Share a Key, Stay in Control

Owners can send a key to family and friends straight from Google Wallet, choose what they can do, and revoke access anytime. Recipients get clear notifications, and owners see who has a key at a glance.

Designing for Security

Keys live in the phone’s secure element and require device unlock for sensitive actions. If a phone is lost, Find My Device can remove keys remotely. We surfaced these protections clearly so security felt reassuring, not intimidating.
